The Trail to the Sacred Source
The Gaumukh trek is a journey that combines adventure with deep spiritual meaning. Starting from the sacred town of Gangotri, this 18km trail takes you to an altitude of 13,200 feet (4,023 m). The path follows the Bhagirathi River, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks and the rugged beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas. Our experienced guides will not only lead the way but also share captivating stories about the history, mythology, and local culture of this incredible region.
Your Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Gangotri: Your adventure begins in the sacred town of Gangotri, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. After checking in, you’ll have time to acclimatize and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. In the evening, witness the captivating Ganga Aarti, a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 2: Trek from Gangotri to Bhojbasa: After a hearty breakfast, we start our trek towards Bhojbasa. The trail is a gradual ascent along the Bhagirathi River, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. We’ll set up camp in Bhojbasa for the night, under a blanket of stars.
Day 3: Trek to Gaumukh and Return to Bhojbasa: Today is the highlight of the trek as we make our way to Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. The trail can be challenging in parts, with moraines and glacial debris. But the reward is the breathtaking sight of the glacier and the emerging Bhagirathi River. After spending time at this sacred spot, we’ll trek back to Bhojbasa for the night.
Day 4: Return to Gangotri: After breakfast, we’ll begin our descent back to Gangotri, filled with memories of an incredible journey to the source of the Ganges.

Preparing for Your Gaumukh Trek
Before You Go
- Physical Fitness: Engage in stamina-building exercises like jogging, cycling, or swimming for at least two weeks before the trek.
- Medical Consultation: Consult your doctor before the trek, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Carry any personal medications you may need.
- Essential Packing: Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, comfortable trekking shoes, woolen socks, a hat, gloves, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.
During the Trek
